Wow...

Bush optimistic about economy

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 2 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - President Bush on Thursday cited "some unsettling times" in the U.S. housing and credit markets as he sought to assure jittery Americans that the economy is holding up well despite worries about a recession.

if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object(); window.yzq_d['VL1uCNG_fzo-']='&U=13bjvk984%2fN%3dVL1uCNG_fzo-%2fC%3d585610.11442603.11967374.1442997%2fD%3dLREC%2fB%3d4901999';

"I say that the fundamentals of our nation's economy are strong," Bush told a White House news conference.

Inflation is down, markets are steady, unemployment is relatively low, exports are up and corporate profits seem to be healthy, Bush said told reporters at a White House news conference.

He was asked about concerns by some economists that the housing slump and higher mortgage costs could lead to a recession even in spite of action earlier this week by the Federal Reserve to cut short-term interest rates by a half-percentage point.

"There is no question that there is some unsettling times in the housing market and credits associated with the housing market," the president said. But he said he didn't see that spreading to the broader economy.

Bush said he was optimistic about the economy. "But I would be pessimistic if I thought Congress was going to get their — and they're not. We're not going to raise taxes," he added.

Pressed on whether he thought there was any risk of recession, Bush said: "You need to talk to economists. I think I got a B in Econ 101."

On Iraq, Bush said there was progress in local communities but that people are disatisfied with the central government.

"Part of the reason why there's not this instant democracy in Iraq is because people are still recovering from Saddam Hussein's brutal rule. Sort of an intersting comment, I heard somebody say, `Where's Mandela?' Well, Mandela's dead because Saddam Hussein killed all the Mandelas."

It was a reference to the charismatic former leader of South Africa who helped reconcile his country after decades of racial division. Mandela is still alive.

Bush also expressed regret that innocent civilians were killed in a shooting Sunday in Baghdad involving guards from a private-sector American security contractor, Blackwater USA. Iraqi officials said at least 11 people died. The president said he wants to find out precisely what happened and that his "thoughts and prayers go out to the families."

"To the extent that innocent life was lost, you know, I'm saddened," he said. "Our objective is to protect innocent life. We've got a lot of brave souls in the theater working hard to protect innocent life."

Bush was asked whether the administration was moving the goal posts on its Iraq expectations, now that the Pentagon has said the some benchmarks that Baghdad was supposed to have met by this November will not be realized until July 2008. "The goals are the same. Achieving those goals has been slower than we thought," Bush said.

Bush opened the news conference challenging Democrats on their proposal for a $35 billion increase in a children's health insurance program. Bush has threatened to veto the bill.

The $35 billion increase for the State Children's Health Insurance Program, called SCHIP, would bring total spending to about $60 billion, or twice the level sought by the administration.

The president requested a simple extension of the current program — which expires at the end of this month — if both sides cannot agree on terms of a new measure.

He said that "more than a million children could lose health coverage" if the program is allowed to expire.

Bush said he took seriously threats by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "This is a person that consistently talks about the use of force on Israel, for example, and Israel is our very firm and strong ally," Bush said.

He was asked about a recent statement by France's foreign minister that the international community should prepare for the possibility of war in the event Iran obtains atomic weapons — although the official later stressed the focus remains on diplomatic pressures.

"I have consistently stated that I am hopeful that we can convince the Iranian regime to give up any ambitions it has in developing a weapons program, and do so peacefully," Bush said. "That ought to be the objective of any diplomacy."

He also defended the decision of New York officials to deny permission to Ahmadinejad to lay a wreath at Ground Zero next week. "I can understand why they would not want somebody that's running a country that's a state sponsor of terror down there at the site," the president said.

Bush spoke out for the first time about the case in Jena, La., in which six black teenagers were initially charged with attempted murder in the beating of a white classmate. He wouldn't comment on legal specifics. The case has attracted nationwide attention.

"The events in Louisiana have saddened me," the president said. "I understand the emotions."

He said the FBI is monitoring the situation, adding: "All of us in America want there to be, you know, fairness when it comes to justice."

Bush repeatedly refused to comment on reports that Israeli planes guided by ground forces attacked an installation — believed to be the beginnings of a nuclear project — in northern Syria on Sept. 6.

Asked about whether North Korea was providing nuclear assistance to Syria, Bush said, "We expect them not to."

On other topics, Bush:

_Said his "feelings are not hurt" by criticism leveled at him in a new book by former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan. "I respectfully disagree with Alan Greenspan when he says this administration didn't handle the fiscal issues we faced in good fashion," Bush said. Greenspan accused Bush of runaway spending and putting politics ahead of sound economics.

_Denounced as "a sorry deal" and "disgusting" a newspaper ad by MoveOn.com that mocked Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. It accused Petreus of "cooking the books" on Iraq and asked: "General Petraeus or General Betray Us?"

What have i become?

Last night I got really really drunk off of three beers. I had eaten nothing for about 9 hours. I then got really really sick and vomited blood because i smoke waaaay too much when i drink.  But in my drunken stupor i said some stupid shit to Lizzy.  I got all mad and retarded and then was like oh fuck, im gonna puke... i threw up for a good 20 min and i remember crying beside the toilet in the fetal position naked until Lizzy came in and saw me and somehow pulled my fat ass up off the floor and put me back in bed, after forgiving me for all of the stupid things i said while i blubbered like a fucking baby.  i don't remember exactly what i said.  i couldn't remember last night.  i do know that i hurt like hell, everything is loud and my abs hurt like a mother fucker.  and i have to go to my parents' house to clean out my room (turns out that whole thing was just a scare tactic so i would clean out my room...cute) and then go to work and close.  im not excited or amused by either prospect...

Long time no see. Wanna fuck?

haha.  sorry.  i just thought that would be a funny title.

so, im at home in bed after not going to work and not doing jack shit.  i threw up everything i ate last night and then everything i ate this morning and i have tried to eat some mild things this afternoon.  so far, they have stayed down, but that old familiar feeling is coming back and i have a feeling i may very well be praying to the porcelain goddess in the very near future.  and so, i update,

i apologize to anyone who may have actually enjoyed reading my journal for the insane amount of time that has passed since my last post. my computer was lovingly yanked from my desk by our special needs puppy (Stevie the Distemper Dog!) and the DC jack was cracked terribly. I took it to best buy (huge mistake) to have it fixed under the service plan my parents bought for me and was robbed of my computer and any substantial access to the internet for a good 6 or 7 weeks.

i have a new job. at an eBay store.  however, business sucks and the company is about to go under. henceforth, i am looking for a new job.  i have an interview at michael's on thursday, but i think it might be weird working with Liz.  so far the success of our relationship can be largely credited to the fact that we miss eachother like crazy when apart and so spend most of our time off together, telling eachother how much we love one another.  there's more to it than that, but my love for Liz can be found amply described in previous posts since january of 2005.

thats it for now.  its dinner time.  leave comments biatches!

Strange Days Behind and More to come...

Well, my grandfather passed away last night.  At Around 8:15.  We were all there.  My Mom and Aunt were in the room with him and he just stopped breathing.  He looked glad to finally get some reast and not have to worry about working so hard at living.  It was a long hard fight.  I miss him terribly, but then I've missed him terribly for the past couple of weeks when he couldn't talk and didn't know where he was.  He wasn't really my Papa (pronounced PAW-PAW, not PAW-Puh) anymore, but at least he was still kind of here. I had dreams about him last night.  I woke up several times.  I called into work and told them I'd be taking time with my family and that I would let them know when I was ready to come back.  It was so strange.  It didn't happen like i expected it to.  i expected something bigger, some grand exit.  Instead, he was just gone.  I asked my mom if I could have all of his books and his unabridged dictionary because he was always fascinated by my course of study in high school.  He was trying to learn Spanish.  I don't know if he ever succeeded. But it was fun when we were both trying to learn together. And then, once I became fluent, He looked so fucking proud of me.  He'd always ask me how to say things in Spanish or send me poems and such.  I always kind of disregarded that kind of stuff, but now I'll cherish it.
He was a huge Mark Twain fan.  I want to speak at his funeral, but I don't know if my mom wants me to.  She won't let me sing either.  WTF?  I miss him.  I'm going stir crazy.  I apologize for this strange word vomit... I leave you with lyrics that will probably make me cry every time i hear them...

Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Sometimes it feels like this worlds gone crazy
Grandpa, take me back to yesterday
When the line between right and wrong
Didn't seem so hazy

Did lovers really fall in love to stay
And stand beside each other, come what may
Was a promise really something people kept
Not just something they would say
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away
Oh, grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days

Grandpa, everything is changing fast
We call it progress, but I just don't know
And grandpa, Let's wander back into the past
And paint me the picture of long ago

Did lovers really fall in love to stay
And stand beside each other come what may
Was a promise really something people kept
Not just something they would say and then forget
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away
Oh, grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Oh, grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
